What is Stress — and What Does It Do to Your Body?

Stress is your body’s natural response to demands or threats. It’s not always bad — short-term stress helps you respond to challenges, focus, and perform under pressure. But when stress becomes chronic, it can harm your physical and mental health, impair performance, and lead to burnout.

How Stress Works: the Science in Plain Terms

  1. Stressors and perception

  • A stressor is any event, thought, or condition that your brain interprets as demanding or threatening. Stress is not just the external event — it depends on your perception and resources. Two people can face the same situation and have very different stress responses.

  1. The brain’s role: threat detection and appraisal

  • The amygdala acts as an early-warning system. If it flags something as a threat, it sends a signal to the hypothalamus.

  • The hypothalamus coordinates two main response pathways: the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis.

  1. Autonomic nervous system (fast response)

  • The ANS has two branches: sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest).

  • When the sympathetic branch activates, it triggers a rapid cascade: increased heart rate, faster breathing, pupil dilation, and a release of adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine).

  • This prepares your body for immediate action: more blood to muscles, increased glucose availability, sharpened focus.

  1. HPA axis (sustained response)

  • For longer-lasting stressors, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), prompting the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol.

  • Cortisol helps mobilize energy (by increasing blood sugar), modulates inflammation, and affects many systems to help you cope with prolonged demands.

  • Under normal conditions, cortisol follows a daily rhythm: high in the morning to wake you up, tapering toward evening. Stress can dysregulate that rhythm.

Short-term (acute) vs. long-term (chronic) stress

  • Acute stress: brief, intense. Useful in danger or tight deadlines. Physiological changes are temporary and usually resolve when the stressor ends.

  • Chronic stress: ongoing, unresolved demands (work overwhelm, caregiving, financial strain, etc.). The body remains in a heightened state; cortisol and sympathetic activity may stay elevated or become dysregulated. Over time, this wears down systems and increases disease risk.

How this affects your body and nervous system

  1. Cardiovascular system

  • Repeated sympathetic activation raises heart rate and blood pressure. Chronic stress increases risk of hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

  1. Immune system

  • Short-term stress can boost certain immune responses. Chronic cortisol exposure, however, suppresses aspects of immune function and increases inflammation, raising susceptibility to infections and autoimmune issues.

  1. Metabolism and weight

  • Cortisol increases blood glucose and can promote fat storage, particularly visceral fat. Combined with stress-driven eating and disrupted sleep, this contributes to weight gain and metabolic syndrome.

  1. Brain structure and function

  • Chronic stress affects areas like the hippocampus (memory and learning), prefrontal cortex (decision-making, impulse control), and amygdala (emotional reactivity). High stress can impair memory, reduce cognitive flexibility, and increase anxiety and reactivity.

  1. Nervous system balance

  • Prolonged sympathetic dominance suppresses parasympathetic activity. That reduces your ability to relax, digest, and repair. Symptoms include poor digestion, sleep disruption, and slower recovery from illness or exercise.

  1. Digestive system

  • Stress can alter gut motility and microbiome balance, contributing to symptoms like heartburn, IBS, nausea, and appetite changes.

  1. Sleep and recovery

  • Stress increases arousal and cortisol, making it harder to fall and stay asleep. Poor sleep worsens stress resilience, creating a vicious cycle.

  1. Musculoskeletal system

  • Chronic muscle tension, headaches, and pain (neck, shoulders, lower back) are common with ongoing sympathetic arousal.

  1. Mental health

  • Prolonged stress increases risk of anxiety disorders, depression, irritability, and burnout. It impairs motivation and can reduce enjoyment of activities.
