Employee burnout — and how to stop it becoming a business risk

Burnout 2 Unstoppable Corporate workshops deliver practical resilience, stress management and conflict training for organisations under pressure.

Paul Cashmore combines over thirty years of operational leadership experience with evidence-based human performance strategies to help organisations improve leadership capability, decision making, communication and performance under pressure.

Paul has featured as a Fugitive Hunter in the global television series Hunted and draws on real-world pressure, resilience and performance experience from operating in high-pressure roles — from disarming a gunman during an active shooting to leading teams, protecting high-profile individuals and building numerous businesses.

An ambassador for suicide-prevention charity Baton of Hope, he has delivered training and talks to Fujifilm Global, police teams, corporate groups and senior British Army nurses. Burnout 2 Unstoppable Corporate helps organisations build calmer, stronger, more resilient teams with practical tools to manage stress, prevent burnout, handle conflict and adapt to change.

High performers are often the hardest to spot

Some of the employees most at risk of burnout are the ones managers value most.

They say yes.
They take responsibility.
They hold themselves accountable.
They do not like letting people down.
They keep going when others would stop.

On the surface, these behaviours look like commitment. But without boundaries, recovery and honest workload conversations, these same people can become your highest burnout risk.

Eventually, organisations lose the people they most wanted to keep.

Recognising this pattern early is essential.

What does employee burnout look like?

Burnout can be difficult to spot because many high-performing employees do not immediately stop working. In fact, they often keep going for too long.

They may still attend meetings, hit deadlines and appear committed on the outside, while internally they are exhausted, detached and struggling to recover.

Some of the most common signs include:

  • 1. Persistent fatigue

  • 2. Reduced performance

  • 3. Cynicism or detachment

  • 4. Loss of motivation

  • 5. Increased irritability or stress

  • 6. Avoidance behaviours

  • 7. Conflict and communication breakdown

  • 8. Change fatigue

These signs often appear gradually. That is why managers and leaders need practical tools to notice pressure earlier and respond with confidence.

Burnout 2 Unstoppable delivers practical resilience, stress management and conflict training for organisations under pressure.

  • HSE reports that 964,000 workers experienced work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25.

  • Stress, depression or anxiety accounted for approximately 22.1 million lost working days.

  • CIPD’s 2025 research put average employee absence at 9.4 days annually.

  • Deloitte estimates poor mental health costs UK employers approximately £28 billion per year, with presenteeism the largest component.

Practical training for performing under pressure — without burning out.

From a high-impact one-hour masterclass to a fully immersive physical experience, every session gives people practical tools they can use immediately at work and in life.

THE MASTERCLASS

60-Minute Lunch & Learn

A fast-paced, engaging introduction to what pressure actually does to the brain, body and behaviour — and how to regain control before stress starts controlling you.

In the one hour Masterclass delivered via Zoom video link, participants learn how to recognise their own warning signs, understand the fight-or-flight response and use simple techniques to change their physiological and psychological state.

Participants leave understanding:

  • Pressure vs chronic stress

  • The body's fight-or-flight response

  • Why thinking and decision-making change under pressure

  • Personal warning signs

  • Simple breathing and state-regulation techniques

  • The 90-Second Reset

  • Practical strategies they can use immediately

The objective is simple: improve awareness, encourage earlier intervention and give employees practical tools before pressure begins affecting performance, communication or attendance.

PRESSURE RESET

Half-Day Practical Workshop

Understanding pressure is useful.

Knowing what to do when you're experiencing it is considerably more valuable.

Pressure Reset is an interactive half-day workshop exploring stress management, burnout prevention, emotional regulation, communication and performance under pressure.

Participants don't simply listen — they assess their own pressure patterns and develop a practical personal strategy.

Participants leave with individual pressure-management strategies rather than generic wellbeing advice — helping teams communicate better, recognise problems earlier and maintain performance through demanding periods.

PERFORMANCE UNDER PRESSURE

Full-Day Immersive Experience

Our flagship full-day programme combines psychology, practical stress-management techniques, physical activity and controlled pressure experiences.

Participants first learn how their nervous system responds to stress.

Then they experience those responses for themselves.

The result is a memorable development day that connects the theory of pressure with what actually happens when heart rate, adrenaline, emotion and uncertainty increase.

THE FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT CHALLENGE™

Controlled Aggression Simulation

What happens when somebody suddenly enters your personal space, raises their voice and creates genuine psychological pressure?

This carefully controlled experiential exercise allows participants to experience their own fight, flight or freeze response in a managed training environment.

Using specialist protective equipment and a structured scenario, participants experience elevated pressure before learning how to.

This is not another corporate wellbeing presentation.

It is an immersive team-development experience designed to create memory, behaviour change and practical application.
